KinoCult presents: Dreams (1990) by Akira Kurosawa. October 14 at 19:00 at Kino Lumiere. Dreams is one of Akira Kurosawa's most personal films — eight stories inspired by his own dreams and Japanese folklore. A young boy witnesses a fox wedding procession; a soldier meets the spirits of his fallen comrades; an accident at a nuclear power plant turns Mount Fuji into an apocalyptic landscape; and in one of the most famous episodes a hero literally walks into Vincent van Gogh's paintings. Dreams appeared at a particularly symbolic moment of Kurosawa's career. In March 1990, at the age of 80, he received an honorary Oscar for his lifetime contribution to cinema, presented by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. A few months later Dreams opened the Cannes festival, with Spielberg as executive producer, Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic behind part of the visual effects, and Martin Scorsese in the unusual role of Vincent van Gogh. The film later earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
