The Importance of Being Earnest (Years Later)

More than 30 years after the events of The Importance of Being Earnest, the heroes of Oscar Wilde's famous play find themselves in comic situations again — this time in a sequel written by American playwright Tom Thomas. The story of Gwen, Algy, Cecily, Ernie, Brenda and Willie Jukes unfolds in 1933, with the Great Depression and the Wall Street crash in full swing and Hitler coming to power in Germany. Add the air raids, the longing for bygone years, and a brilliant allegory of a lost happy life lived with empty pots instead of helmets. The world is collapsing, looking like a burst balloon. Fireworks are impressive, but putting a single pot on your head is enough to feel better again — especially if it is the pot in which your wife cooked her wonderful Irish stew. Time passes, the bell tolls, but there is always strength and appetite for one more madcap escapade — the one that reassures us life goes on, and no one can take that pleasure from us.
