The Queen of Spades

"The Queen of Spades" is an adult puppet-theatre production by Drama Theatre Plovdiv (ДКТ Пловдив), directed by Veselka Kuncheva from an adaptation she co-wrote with Ina Bozhidarova, running about 70 minutes and recommended for ages 14+. Using the card game as a metaphor, it explores desire and fate — how desire gradually consumes us, dictates our choices and distorts who we are, setting fear-suppressed longing against the destructive pull of passion. The cast includes Plamen Dimov, Polina Hristova, Maria Pavlova, Elin Stoyanova and others, with sets by Marieta Golomehova, music by Hristo Namliev and choreography by Stefan Vitanov. It has won the Plovdiv Theatre Prize (2016), the Grand Prix of the "Pierrot" puppet festival (2017), and awards at the "Golden Dolphin" festival in Varna.
