Beckett Program: Happy Days

All the lofty dreams of 20th-century theatre — from Antonin Artaud's longing to "destroy appearances," through Peter Brook's "total theatre," to Heiner Müller's "play with realities" — are embodied in the dramaturgy of Samuel Beckett. His poetic "theatre machines" — buried in the earth, living in trash bins or cylinders — echo the martyrs of Dante's Inferno, but punished without sin, punished to live.
